The English Education Study Program of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), University of Mataram (Unram), held an academic event entitled “Multilingual Perspective in English Language Learning”, featuring keynote speaker Prof. Ashadi, M.Hum., Ed.D from Yogyakarta State University. This event highlighted the importance of a multilingual approach in learning English as a foreign language, where language is viewed not merely as an object of memorization, but as a tool for thinking and shaping identity.

In his presentation, Prof. Ashadi emphasized the importance of translanguaging practices in English language classrooms. He explained that allowing students to strategically use Bahasa Indonesia and local languages can enhance their understanding, creativity, and confidence in using English. Lecturers and students of the English Education Study Program at FKIP Unram responded positively to this approach, which has begun to be implemented in the learning process to bridge theory and practice in a more meaningful way.
More than just a pedagogical strategy, Prof. Ashadi also encouraged participants to view language as a social and cultural force. He emphasized that translanguaging is not merely about method, but also a form of advocacy for linguistic and cultural diversity. This event reinforced FKIP Unram’s commitment to creating English language education that is inclusive, relevant, and rooted in local contexts, while still opening global perspectives for students.
