A touching and proud moment marked the academic journey of an extraordinary student from the English Education Undergraduate Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), University of Mataram (UNRAM). This student not only succeeded in overcoming the challenges of higher education but also made history as the first student with special needs to be admitted through the achievement track and now becomes the first special needs graduate from the English Education Undergraduate Program at FKIP UNRAM.

In an emotional reflection, the student expressed how happy he was to have completed his four-year academic journey. “Yesterday was one of the happiest days of my life. It was a mix of emotions — sadness, pride, happiness — all rolled into one,” he said.

Amid the joy, he also shared his anxiety about the future — a worry felt by many university graduates. “What should I do after this? What am I capable of doing?” he asked, capturing a deeply human feeling after a long and challenging journey.

Yet behind all those worries, a deep sense of gratitude shines through. He shared his academic journey, filled with challenges that would have been impossible to overcome without the support of those closest to him. He mentioned Alhan, a classmate who consistently stood by his side — helping him through lectures, lending a laptop, and even accompanying him to meet with lecturers. He also expressed his heartfelt thanks to his two academic advisors, his parents, and his extended family, who never stopped offering encouragement, prayers, and motivation.

“I am truly grateful and thankful to everyone who has helped me. They are incredible people who supported me with genuine sincerity,” he said, emotionally.

He also emphasized that his disability was never a barrier to achieving success. On the contrary, with perseverance and the right support, every challenge can be turned into a strength. He concluded his story with a prayer and hope for continued strength to face the tougher and more challenging life that lies beyond campus.

This student’s story stands as living proof of the importance of inclusivity and equality in higher education. In line with the commitments of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), UNRAM has demonstrated that with a supportive educational environment, every individual — regardless of physical condition — has the right to succeed and contribute to the nation.
