The S1 English Education Department was established from the Diploma I English program, formed in 1981 based on the Rector’s Decree of Universitas Mataram No. 102/PT.21/H4/84 dated April 25, 1981, and reinforced by the Presidential Decree No. 63 of 1982 dated September 7, 1982. Two years later, the Diploma II English program was created to accommodate the aspirations of Diploma I graduates who wished to enhance their educational qualifications. Four years later, the management of the program was upgraded to a Diploma III, while the Diploma I program was discontinued.

In 1992, FKIP Universitas Mataram was entrusted with managing the DIII PGSM (Diploma III for Teacher Certification in English) in collaboration with the West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Education Office, aimed at improving the qualifications of junior high school teachers of English who held only a Diploma I. This task continued for three batches, after which, from the academic year 1995/1996 onwards, the program transitioned to managing the S1 PGSM, which admitted junior and senior high school English teachers with DIII qualifications.

Since the academic year 1997/1998, FKIP Universitas Mataram has been managing the S1 English Education Department based on the Rector’s Decree No. 4179/J18.H/HK.01.11/1997.
