Budi Luhur Mataram National Trilingual School is an institution that provides primary and secondary education, with the teaching and learning process conducted in three languages: Indonesian, English, and Mandarin. To enhance instructional practices that integrate foreign languages with subject-matter content, the school organized an Academic Discussion on the Implementation of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) as an effort to improve the quality of integrated language- and content-based learning. This activity took place in an academic atmosphere that<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

was interactive and collaborative, involving representatives of the foundation, school leadership, and teachers. The purpose of this activity was to bring together the learning practices that have already been implemented at the school with the concepts that should be present in the implementation of bilingual education. The discussion was facilitated by I Made Sujana from the English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), University of Mataram. In his presentation, the facilitator explained the basic concept of CLIL as a learning approach with dual objectives, namely mastery of academic content and the development of foreign language competence. CLIL positions language not only as a means of communication but also as an object of learning, while maintaining the integrity and authenticity of academic content through linguistic and cognitive scaffolding. <\/span><\/p>\n

The discussion materials covered the rationale for implementing CLIL at the secondary school level, including more contextual and meaningful learning, efficiency in curriculum integration, strengthening higher-order thinking skills (HOTS), academic literacy, and support for internationalization and global competitiveness. Participants were also guided to understand the CLIL framework known as the 4Cs\u2014Content, Communication, Cognition, and Culture\u2014as the foundation for planning and implementing instruction. It was also explained how the implementation can progress from Soft CLIL toward Hard CLIL, which in the long term leads to education based on English-Medium Instruction (EMI).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The event was attended by the Director of the Budi Luhur Foundation, Mr. Widi Winarto; the Principal of SMA Nasional 3 Bahasa Budi Luhur Mataram, Mr. Wahyu Kasidi; the Vice Principal for Public Relations, Khasyatillah; the Principal of SMP Nasional 3 Bahasa Budi Luhur, Mrs. Esther Meliana; as well as all teachers of Sekolah Nasional 3 Bahasa Budi Luhur Mataram. The presence of these stakeholders demonstrated a shared commitment to the development of innovative teaching and learning practices. <\/p>\n

Through this discussion, it is expected that teachers will gain both conceptual and practical understanding of the steps involved in implementing CLIL, starting from context analysis, formulation of dual objectives, material development, instructional strategies, to assessment and follow-up. This activity serves as a strategic initial step in promoting the implementation of high-quality bilingual learning within the school environment. In the long term, instructional innovation through the CLIL approach is expected to bring a new dimension to the delivery of primary and secondary education, enabling students to develop strong academic competence alongside foreign language proficiency, particularly in English and Mandarin.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Sebagaimana disampaikan oleh Direktur Sekolah Nasional 3 Bahasa Budi Luhur, Bapak Widi Winarto, untuk menjadikan Sekolah Nasional Budi Luhur sebagai leading school diperlukan formula-formula untuk pengembangan sumber daya. Diskusi akademik ini perlu diwujudkan menjadi program-program kegiatan yang harus direalisasikan oleh semua jenjang pelaku (Yayasan, Kepla Sekolah, Guru, dan Tenaga Kependidikan); sehingga candaan Wakil Kepala Sekolah Bidang Humas, Khasyatillah menjadikan \u201cSekolah Nasional rasa Internasional\u201d segera bisa terwujud.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

From the university\u2019s perspective (FKIP Unram), this activity represents the realization of the Kampus Berdampak initiative on a minor scale, whereby higher education expertise contributes to improving the quality of education in its surrounding region. It is hoped that the good intentions of all parties will make a meaningful contribution to educational improvement, at least within the city of Mataram. This activity also seeks to foster a mutually beneficial relationship between the school, as a site for student teaching practice, and the teacher education institution, namely FKIP Unram. <\/p>\n

As Deep Learning has become a defining icon of primary and secondary education today, it requires further interpretation by education practitioners. Deep Learning can never be achieved without Deep Teaching, and Deep Teaching can never be realized without Deep Planning. Therefore, it is essential to synergize Deep Planning and Deep Teaching toward achieving Deep Learning. Happy CLIL-ing to the team of Sekolah Nasional 3 Bahasa Mataram. Bravo.
