North Lombok, August 9, 2025 — Four lecturers from the Mathematics Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), University of Mataram, visited Senaru Traditional Village, Bayan District, North Lombok, to participate in a Wariga Reading Workshop. The activity was initiated by Rinjani-Lombok Geopark in collaboration with the Santiri Foundation and the Bayan Indigenous School, in commemoration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

The participating lecturers—Dr. H. Sudi Prayitno, M.Si., Dr. Laila Hayati, M.Si., Dwi Novitasari, M.Pd., and Ulfa Lu’luilmaknun, M.Pd.—studied Wariga, a traditional knowledge system used by indigenous communities to determine auspicious times, forecast weather, choose directions, and align daily activities with natural cycles.

For the Mathematics Education Program of FKIP UNRAM, this activity is not only about cultural preservation but also about integrating local wisdom into mathematics education. Wariga holds great potential as a source of inspiration for teaching mathematical concepts through an ethnomathematical approach, making learning more contextual and closely connected to students’ everyday lives.

Aligned with the program’s vision to advance research-based mathematics education with a global outlook and the unique hallmark of etnosasambo, the insights gained from Senaru are expected to enrich teaching materials and research. Moreover, they serve as a reminder that mathematics is not confined to classrooms but also thrives within the traditions and cultural practices of society.
