North Lombok, May 29, 2025 — On Thursday, May 29, 2025, sixth-semester students of the Sociology Education Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), University of Mataram (Unram), carried out a field visit to the Bayan Traditional Village in North Lombok Regency. This activity was part of the learning process for the Ethnographic Research Methods course.

The visit aimed to provide students with hands-on experience in applying ethnography—a qualitative research approach used to deeply explore social and cultural life within communities. The Bayan Traditional Village was chosen as the research site due to its strong preservation of local customs and traditional values.

Throughout the activity, students engaged in participatory observation, held dialogues with local cultural leaders, and documented various social and cultural practices of the community. The data collected will be analyzed and compiled into final reports for the course.

The course instructor, Dr. Hamissyukrie ZM, M.Hum., emphasized the importance of this activity in fostering students’ social sensitivity and analytical skills. “By interacting directly with the community, students gain a concrete and reflective understanding of cultural contexts. This is a crucial part of learning in the field of sociology,” he explained. The field visit also aimed to strengthen the relationship between the university and local communities, promoting mutual learning and collaboration. Students expressed their enthusiasm and noted the valuable insights they gained from the experience.

Through this initiative, the Sociology Education Program at FKIP Unram reaffirms its commitment to enhancing experiential learning—equipping students with essential research skills and a deeper understanding of social dynamics.
