Ramadan is a blessed month, where every good deed is multiplied and the door to Allah’s forgiveness is wide open. In one of his traditions, the Prophet said:

“Whoever fasts during the month of Ramadan with full faith and expecting reward from Allah, his past sins will be forgiven.” (HR. Bukhari & Muslim).

This Hadith serves as a reminder that Ramadan fasting is not just about enduring hunger and thirst, but also a means of expiating sins for those who observe it with faith and sincerity. Ramadan is a moment for every Muslim to improve themselves, improve the quality of worship, and strengthen their relationship with Allah SWT.

However, what a loss for someone who wastes this opportunity. Fasting is not only a matter of refraining from eating and drinking, but also keeping the tongue, sight, and actions from things that are not pleasing to Allah. Rasulullah SAW reminded:

“Whoever does not give up false speech and bad deeds, Allah does not need him to give up eating and drinking.” (HR. Bukhari).

A perfect fast is one that not only restrains hunger and thirst, but also keeps oneself from foul speech, gossip, lies, and all forms of immorality. In fact, someone who fasts but does not guard his tongue from bad words, his fast may be in vain in the sight of Allah.

Fadilah Ramadan

Moreover, it is important to realize that fasting is an act of worship that cannot be replaced at will. For those who deliberately abandon fasting Ramadan without a legitimate excuse, there is no substitute for making up the fast at another time. This indicates how great the obligation of fasting Ramadan is and how great the punishment is for those who underestimate it.

As Muslims, we are taught to always improve the quality of our worship. Let's not make fasting just an annual routine, but let's make this Ramadan an opportunity to really improve ourselves. Let's train ourselves to be more patient, more grateful, and closer to Allah SWT.

Quality fasting is not only fasting that restrains hunger and thirst, but also fasting that is able to keep us away from sin and bring us closer to Allah. May this Ramadan be a turning point for all of us in increasing our piety and achieving His pleasure.
