By Dr. Baharuddin, M.Hum.

In this world, we often chase academic titles—bachelor’s, master’s, even doctorates—symbols of expertise and achievement in various fields. Yet, these titles are temporary; one day, we will leave this world, and they will no longer hold any significance. However, there is one title that will never fade, one that will determine our status in the Hereafter: muttaqin—those who are truly God-conscious.

Ramadan is a special month, a time when we strive to attain this noble title. As Allah states in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:183), the ultimate purpose of fasting is to develop taqwa:

“O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you so that you may attain taqwa.”

But taqwa is not just about performing acts of worship in public. Many people appear pious in the presence of others, but only a few maintain their devotion when they are alone. True taqwa means remaining obedient to Allah in all situations—whether among people or in solitude. This is what is known as taqiya, a state of unwavering consciousness of Allah in every moment of life.

In Surah Maryam, Allah reminds us that genuine taqwa is not about outward appearances but about what is rooted in the heart, guiding every step we take. This is what separates true God-consciousness from mere pretense.

So, let us reflect—have we only been pursuing worldly titles, or have we also been striving for the ultimate honor of being muttaqin? Academic degrees are earned through study and examinations, but the title of muttaqin is attained through sincerity in worship and steadfastness in righteousness. It is a divine recognition, one that will define our eternal destiny.

May this Ramadan be a time not just for physical fasting but for achieving its true purpose—becoming devoted servants of Allah in all circumstances. Ameen.
